El Diccionario de la Real Academia de la Lengua Española (RAE), define el término hórreo, " 1. Granero o lugar donde se recogen los granos. 2. Construcción de madera o piedra, aislada, de forma rectangular o cuadrada, sostenida por columnas, característica del Noroeste de la Península Ibérica, donde se utiliza para guardar granos y otros productos agrícolas.”

Hoy la mayoría se conservan en Galicia y Asturias, diferentes estructuralmente, y dentro de Asturias, sin profundizar en el tema, hay que distinguir entre hórreos y paneras, siendo estas últimas más grande y de forma rectangular.

Debajo de los hórreos y paneras, se ha guardado el carro, y aperos de labranza, incluso cuenta Jovellanos en sus diarios, en el viaje que tiene lugar entre el 6 de agosto al 29 de noviembre de 1791, que por ejemplo, en Ceceda (Nava – Asturias), las mujeres fabricaban ollas de barro bajo los hórreos, incluso se habla de haber sido escuela, como cuenta Ricardo Becerra de Bengoa en su libro “De Palencia a Oviedo y Gijón Langreo, Trubia y Caldas” (1884), donde nos dice que en el pueblo de Villallana (Lena – Asturias) había una escuela debajo de un hórreo, y que en Requejo (Mieres – Asturias) había lavaderos, pero también para tener al ganado, lo habitual era que el ganado estuviera en la propia casa, y tuviera la función secundaria de calefacción, muy moderno, espero se me permita compararlo con la biomasa, aunque es ecológica, al final se quema un combustible, dado que dicen que los rumiantes contaminan mucho, por los gases de efecto invernadero que provocan, compensaban reduciendo el consumo de otras fuentes de energía en la casa, que no era otra que quemar madera, pero bastantes problemas tenían antiguamente para sobrevivir, como para pensar en el cambio climático. El tema del ganado debajo del hórreo causaba problemas de salud, en 1885 el médico municipal de Colunga, Celestino Pumares Menéndez, pública Consejos Higiénicos y Cartilla Popular Sanitaria contra el Cólera Morbo Asiática, y allí dice “el mejor estado del Mercado actual de ganado vacuno, cuidando mucho allí de la limpieza, particularmente debajo de los hórreos”.

Aunque también los hórreos eran ejemplo, hay que recordar que en 1884 se publicaban instrucciones contra el cólera, por parte de la Sociedad Española de Higiene, en la parte de Reglas nacionales de preservación, “22. Los hospitales merecen un especial estudio; la ciencia aconseja en estos casos el establecimiento de hospitales de epidemias que alberguen el exceso de enfermería y eviten el sobrecargar los existentes. En la creación de estos establecimientos sanitarios conviene seguir el principio de la disgregación, como el más acomodado a la razón. Así, pues, más vale crear varios hospitales pequeños, aislados, que uno muy capaz. En cuanto al modo de construcción, la Sociedad Española de Higiene piensa que los hechos de madera sobre postes de piedra, al estilo de las construcciones en Asturias y Galicia llamadas hórreos, llenan las necesidades del momento, se forman rápidamente y después de terminada la, epidemia se queman.”

La RAE, define gálico, en su segunda acepción como sífilis. El diccionario médico escrito por Chris Brooker, la define como “Infección de transmisión sexual causada por la espiroqueta Treponema pallidum. Puede ser congénita o adquirida. La congénita se transmite de la madre al feto a través de la placenta. La adquirida se contrae durante el contacto sexual con una persona infectada.”, se llamaba gálico, por una epidemia de esta enfermedad en el ejército francés, que a principios del s. XVI asediaba la ciudad de Nápoles, perteneciente en ese momento de la Corona de Aragón, hay que recordar que la  primera acepción es “Perteneciente o relativo a las Galias”.

Bueno y a que viene esto, se ha vuelto loco el que escribe estas letras, puede ser, pero sigamos, el 06/02/1871, el Tribunal Supremo de España emitía una sentencia, por el recurso de una mujer, al haberse declarado como injurias unas expresiones dirigidas a otra mujer, y cuales eran esas palabras que dijo nuestra amiga J. G. L. (la sentencia expresa solo iniciales y solo el nombre de la calle donde sucedieron los hechos, del Castillo), “en otro tiempo había curado el gálico por debajo de las paneras u hórreos”, los improperios que dijo J. G. L. no tuvieron desperdicio, desde acusar a la otra mujer I. G. R., de “todo lo que tenía era robado y ganado malamente debajo de los hórreos”.
Y ¿cómo se resolvió el juicio?, bueno el juez de primera instancia las había considerado faltas, en cambio la Audiencia lo consideró que “constituían injurias graves, por perjudicar notablemente su fama y reputación, y que podía apreciarse en favor de la procesada la circunstancia atenuante de no haber tenido intención de causar todo el mal que produjo; condenando a la procesada a siete meses de destierro a distancia de cinco leguas (RAE 1 legua 5.572,7 m) del radio de la villa, a la multa de 10 duros (RAE 1 duro 5 pesetas, 5 pesetas 0,03 €) y en la mitad de las costas procesales”, el Supremo ratificó la sentencia de la Audiencia. La sentencia fue publicada por la Gaceta de Madrid (hoy Boletín Oficial del Estado) el 26/03/1871. La cura de la sífilis llegó con el descubrimiento de la penicilina y la aparición de los antibióticos en el s. XX, durante siglos para curar la sífilis se usaba mercurio. Seguro que algún curanderos, sangradores,… ha intentado curar enfermos debajo de algún hórreo, y porque no sífilis, y sí, seguro que se ha cogido debajo o dentro de algún hórreo.
