David Villa jugador de fútbol, asturiano (Tuilla – Asturias 03/12/1981) el pasado 30/09/2016, marcó 2 goles con su equipo el New York City, que consiguió el liderato de la Conferencia Este de la Major League Soccer de Estados Unidos (MLS), Villa posee el nombre asturiano por Nueva York, pero no es la 1ª vez que se oye ese nombre en aquella ciudad, vamos a retroceder en el tiempo. Cuentan el libro “Arte, cultura y sociedad en la emigración española a América”, 1992 por María Cruz Morales Saro y Moisés Llordén Miñambres; y Moisés Llordén Miñambres en el capítulo “Las Asociaciones de los inmigrantes asturianos en América” dentro del libro “El Asociacionismo en la emigración española a América” 2008, que el Centro Asturiano de Nueva York nace en el año 1926 como una delegación del de La Habana. Pero los periódicos españoles La Correspondencia de España (Madrid) 24/12/1923 Pág. 1, La Época (Madrid) 27/12/1923 Pág. 1 y Las Provincias (Valencia) 30/12/1923 Pág. 4, dicen que en la última sesión del Centro Asturiano de Nueva York secunda una iniciativa en California y para ello celebraron un festival en su salón – teatro. El periódico La Montaña (Cáceres – Extremadura) 04/08/1925 Pág. 5, La Cosmopolita (Sociedad de Socorros Mutuos tuvo sede C/ Washington, 315 Brooklyn, terminó en La Nacional http://lanacional.org/es/ )  y el Centro Asturiano de Nueva York celebraron una jira campestre, con una fabada (uf, agosto valientes), asistieron 3000 personas, hubo fotógrafos para sacar películas cinematográficos, partidos de béisbol y de fútbol.

No sólo había fútbol en las jiras, el Centro Asturiano tenía equipo de fútbol. Por ejemplo, el 14/05/1927 se enfrentaron a los Brooklyn Wanderes, en el Hawthorne Field, ante 1500 espectadores, como se ve en la alineación solo aparece un apellido español, también jugaron en el Socony Oval y el Todd Field.

El centro Asturiano jugaba en la liga española americana, y en partidos de preparación como en 04/1928 en el Hawthorne Fields, ganando a Crescent.

Era habitual que visitaran Nueva York equipos europeos, por ejemplo en 1927 fue el Real Madrid que gano 1-0 al Galicia F. C., incluso alguna selección, como ocurrió con la selección italiana en 07/1928 y 08/1928, donde se enfrentaron a un all star de la Southern New York States Football Association, seleccionando a un jugador del Centro Asturiano Fryer ó Freyer (lateral izquierda).
En 1934 jugaba en la Metropolitan Soccer League con su equipo Junior. En 1936 jugó la Copa del Estado de Nueva York Junior, ganándola aquel año, derrotando a los Red Wing 5-0, y ganando la final al Hatikvoh por 4-1, como han cambiado los apellidos.

Ese año también participó en la Liga Junior Empire State, y en 1937

El Centro Asturiano de Nueva York no fue el único que apoyo un equipo de fútbol, también el de México, con el Asturias, y también la colonia asturiana participó en el R. C. España, como curiosidad, el Brooklyn Daily Eagle el 24/04/1936 decía que Hispano Brooklyn vendía al Centro Asturiano de México al central internacional Santiago Bonilla.

But the Spanish newspapers La Correspondencia de España (Madrid) 24/12/1923 Pág. 1, La Época (Madrid) 27/12/1923 Pág. 1 y Las Provincias (Valencia) 30/12/1923 Pág. 4, said that in the last session of the Asturian Center of New York, it supported an initiative in California and for it, they celebrated a festival in its salon-theater. There only wasn't football in the outing, the Asturian Center had soccer team. For example on 14/05/1927,  it confronted with the Brooklyn Wanderes, in the Hawthorne Fields, in the presence of 1500 spectators, as shown in the lineup, it only appears a Spanish surname, too they played in the Socony Oval y the Todd Field.

The Asturian Center played in the Spanish American League, and in preparation matches of other teams, as in 04/1928 in the Hawthorne Fields, won to Crescent.

It was usual that European teams visited New York, for example, the Real Madrid was in 1927, that it won 1-0 to the Galicia F. C., even some national soccer team in 07/1928 and 08/1928, where they confronted at an all star of the Southern New York States Football Association, selecting to the player of the Asturian Center Fryer or Freyer (Left back).

The Asturian Center of New York wasn’t the only that it supported a soccer team, too the Asturian Center of Mexico, with the Asturias, and too the Asturian colony participated in the R. C. España, as curiosity, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle on 24/04/1936 said that Hispano Brooklyn sold to the Asturian Centro of Mexico to the international center half, Santiago Bonilla.
