El 28/01/1860, el cónsul de España en Australia, desde Sidney comunica a las Filipinas (recordar que en ese momento, Filipinas pertenecía a España), que el comercio con Australia es muy poco desde las Filipinas, aunque el tabaco labrado que se fuma es de Manila, y tendría buenas salidas el azúcar, café, arroz, cordelería, sombreros de paja... Lo que llega, es en barcos extranjeros, incluso el vino de Jerez viene a través de Inglaterra y no directamente de España, y que el comercio español y filipino deben fijarse en aquella colonia, que está creciendo rápidamente, y da unas cifras del puerto de Sidney entradas en 1859 800 buques, 273.000 Tm y 600.000 Libras de derechos de Aduanas, y se está solucionando el temor a las deserciones de los marineros de los buques, por el aliciente de las minas de oro, como ejemplo, en Sidney, la corbeta “Joven Rosario” atracó para reparar averías, desertaron 3 marinos, fueron apresados en 4 días, ya en el interior de Australia. El cónsul llevaba poco tiempo en Sidney, había sustituido al primer cónsul español en Australia (aprobado por la Reina del Reino Unido, 07/01/1854), Antonio Arróm de Ayala, fallecido en 1859 y que estaba casado con la escritora Cecilia Böhl de Faber “Fernán Caballero”; el nuevo cónsul era Eduardo San Just, que había sido editor en Nueva Orleans del periódico en español “El Pelayo” (1851 – 1852) (El objetivo principal del periódico era oponerse a Narciso López, un revolucionario de origen venezolano que intentaba conseguir el apoyo estadounidense a la liberación de Cuba) y consúl en China, Eduardo murió en Sidney el 29/05/1869, él se suicidó, padecía una leve enfermedad que se manifestó con síntomas de alteración mental.

The consul was new in Sydney, he  had substituted at the first Spanish consul in Australia (approved by Queen of the United Kingdom, 07/01/1854), Antonio Arrom de Ayala died in 1859 and he was married with the writer Cecilia Böhl de Faber “Fernan Caballero”; the new consul was Edward San Just, that he had been editor in New Orleans of the newspaper in Spanish “El Pelayo” (1851 – 1852) (The newspaper’s primary purpose was to oppose Narciso Lopez, a Venezuelan-born revolutionary who was attempting to enlist U.S. support for the liberation of Cuba) and consul in China, Edward died in Sidney on 29/05/1869, he suicided, he was suffering of slight illness, that any symptoms of mental derangement manifested themselves.
