Una novedad en el adorno del pelo de las mujeres españolas, tuvo mucha difusión en los periódicos norteamericanos, de 1916, fue la reducción de tamaño de las peinetas, y se adaptaba al modo de la peluquería americana, llegando incluso algún periódico a titular "adoptar la peineta española", pero no era lo único que pedían adoptar, también, el chal español, como si fuera 2016 época del selfie, las mujeres se hacían fotos con él, incluso habían subido los precios, y los periódicos aconsejaban como hacerse uno más barato, incluso se hizo un foxtrot con el título "Spanish shawl" (Chal español).

Nuevas peinetas 1916

En 1916, se hablaba de las españolas en los periódicos norteamericanos, pero de españolas que vivían en Estados Unidos, salvo la conferencia que daba en Norwich (Connecticut - Estados Unidos) Mabel Haywood (secretaria) sobre la labor del Instituto Internacional para señoritas en España dirigido por Susan D. Huntinton, y de aquella bella espía española detenida en un baile en Ginebra (Suiza), hay que recordar que estaban en plena I Guerra Mundial.

Vamos hablar de españolas en Estados Unidos, como no hablar de Vicenta Botiller Ibarrondo, era de origen español, vivía en Los Ángeles (California), era rica y estaba casada con Gustavo C. Wicherer era barbero, Vicenta no le permitía trabajar porque era demasiado guapo y tenía que estar en casa, Gustavo pidió el divorcio por esa causa, pero se lo denegaron, Vicenta moría en Octubre de 1921.
En aquel año, había problemas en la frontera entre México y Estados Unidos, incluso Estados Unidos organizó una campaña militar para apresar a Pancho Villa, al mando de Pershing, que sería el mando del Ejército de Estados Unidos en la I Guerra Mundial en 1917, en respuesta al ataque de Villa a Columbus (Nuevo México – Estados Unidos ), en aquella campaña contra Villa, al que no apresaron, iban un tal Dwight D. Eisenhower y George Patton; era habitual en el territorio fronterizo el ataque de partidas de bandidos, en 1916 en la frontera en Texas en Fort Hancock el 31/07/1916, los rangers y 8 soldados de caballería, fueron a detener a una banda que estaba a 8 Km. al Sur y 2,5 Km de rancho Sánchez, allí les recibe una mujer española, para la mayoría de los periódicos, y ella les entretiene para que puedan huir y entonces los norteamericanos son cogidos en una emboscada, muriendo 2 norteamericanos y algunos de los bandidos huyeron, dirigiendo ella su huida, los norteamericanos pidieron ayuda a los soldados mexicanos de la guarnición de San Ignacio (México) y los mexicanos les apoyaron, incluso el South Bend News Times el 01/08/1916 la llamó líder de los bandidos.
